Bring structure to your garden
Beyond the plants, how does your garden look in winter? Does it have good bones? By this I mean is the framework for the garden such that even when many plants are dormant the overall design holds up? The hardscape, which can include walkways, walls, fountains, arbors and fences, helps define the garden during every season. Both large and small spaces can be transformed with the addition of a carefully placed arbor, wall or fence. Even a fence or wall that surrounds part of the garden can be effective toward creating an outdoor room. For example, a small backyard behind a townhome becomes an intimate space with the addition of a wall on either side. The house acts as a third wall, and large evergreens such as hemlocks or Cryptomeria japonica form the fourth wall.
